Week at a Glance | September 5-8

Dear Families,

The first days of school have been wonderful, and students are making a smooth transition. Mr. Todos and I have visited all the classes and had a chance to connect with students. It was great to see their excitement and readiness to be back at school. Teachers have been spending time teaching the routines and expectations for successful learning and have focused on building a strong relationship with your child(ren). We are looking forward to all the great learning ahead.

We want to share with all families that our school is a safe, positive, inclusive, equitable and welcoming learning and working environment that supports and responds to the needs of students and staff.

Transportation

The deadline to be included in route planning for the fall was June 11. CBE Transportation continues to accept registration after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing stop with available space. Processing times could be up to six weeks at the beginning of the school year due to volume. Families are responsible for transportation until their registration is confirmed.
There is no financial obligation for registration; families have until the fall to cancel without a fee.

If your child will be taking a different mode of transportation home at the end of the day, you must notify the office before 1 pm. We appreciate your cooperation.

Away for the Day

Valley View School is an “Away for the Day” school. This means that students are not permitted to take out their personal devices, like iPhones, tablets, etc., during the school day. This includes recess and lunchtime, as well as in classrooms, hallways, and washrooms. We understand that some families would like their child(ren) to have a phone for safety reasons, however, students do not need to use their own devices during the school day. Valley View School has a great inventory of technology for students to use. If you need to share a message with your child, please call the main office, and we will make sure your child receives the message. Thank you.

Volunteers

We are so happy to be able to have volunteers in our school and classrooms. To volunteer for your child’s class, or to help on field trips, you will need to have a CBE Volunteer Clearance. This clearance is valid for 5 years. Please contact the office if you need to apply or renew your clearance.

Valley View Meet the Teacher and Fall BBQ - Thursday September 21

We will be inviting you to meet your child’s teacher in person on September 21 at 4:30 – 5:15 pm or 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm to learn more about the academic, social, and well-being goals for this year. You will also have a chance to learn about your child’s classroom routines and expectations. Conference bookings will be available starting Thursday September 14 at 9 am. Please sign up for a conference using the Conference Booking system in your MyCBE account.

The Fall BBQ is being hosted by the Valley View School Council and the Rotary Club. To have a good estimate for the number of families participating, please complete this short form.

Dress for the Weather

We are starting to see changes in the weather and the mornings can be much cooler than the afternoons. Please ensure your child comes to school prepared for any type of weather as many learning activities take place outdoors.

Service Dog – Cello

We want to share that there will be an Assistance Dog (Cello) in our school on most Mondays to assist with emotional regulation, motivation, engagement and classroom community building. The Calgary Board of Education is committed to providing inclusive services and access for all students and employees. This Assistance Dog is registered and trained through a professional organization. All students and staff will be instructed as to the proper protocols regarding working Assistance and Service Dogs, and students will be reminded not to touch or interact with Cello unless granted permission by the staff working with Cello on the day, usually this will be the Principal, Ms. Dharamsi. The school will take all the necessary precautions and will consider the rights of other students and employees (e.g., severe allergies to dogs, phobia to dogs etc.). Please contact the school should this apply to your child, or if you have any further questions. You can also refer to the administrative regulation on Animals in School in the resource section. A picture of Cello is attached on this webpage.
