Week at a Glance | September 11 - 15
Dear Families,
It’s been a great week of learning and connecting at Valley View School! Students are doing great with the new routines and procedures and are enjoying their classes. We had a fun welcome assembly to welcome everyone back to school and students enjoyed a lively performance by teachers!
Establishing Healthy Routines
At this time of year many parents ask how they can support their child at home. Helping your child to develop healthy routines can have positive impacts on their day at school and their learning. Having a regular schedule for eating and sleeping, as well as getting fresh air, exercise, and limiting screen time, are all important steps for a healthy mind, body and spirit. Reading with your child every day will also have significant impacts on their learning. It can be an enjoyable time for you to connect with your child through story. If you would like more information or resources, please feel free to reach out to the school.
Valley View Meet the Teacher and Fall BBQ - Thursday September 21
We will be inviting you to meet your child’s teacher in person on September 21 for the Meet the Teacher and Fall BBQ at Valley View School. Please note that we have adjusted our Meet the Teacher times as follows:
4:30 – 5:15 pm (session 1)
or 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm (session 2)
You will only need to attend one of these sessions.
The purpose of the Meet the Teacher is to learn more about the academic, social, and well-being goals for this year. You will also have a chance to learn about your child’s classroom routines and expectations.
A form will be shared with families later next week to sign up for a Meet the Teacher session.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the school, you can stop by the office during the Meet the Teacher evening to register for a police clearance.
The Fall BBQ is being hosted by the Valley View School Council and the Rotary Club.
Changes to the CBE Volunteer Clearance Process
There are some changes to the Volunteer Clearance Process.
Step 1: Prospective volunteers must first register as a volunteer at the school office where you plan on volunteering. School administrators will verify your identity and register you in the CBE volunteer database. The school office will provide you with a letter enabling you to obtain a police information check from the Calgary Police Service (CPS).
Please note, prospective volunteers must reside in Canada for a full year before registering. Police clearances from countries other than Canada are not accepted.
Step 2: Visit the CPS online system, electronic Police Information Check (ePIC), to obtain your police check using your CBE volunteer letter.
If you are unable to complete the process online, you may visit a police information check location instead.
Step 3: Once you have received your clearance document from CPS you will need to share it with the school in-person or by email.
Cost
Your security clearance is valid for five years and the cost is $21.25 ($15.00 for police clearance and 5.95+GST service fee) which is charged during the online ePIC application. This fee is not covered by the CBE.
For more information, please visit the CBE’s website.
Student Code of Conduct + Progressive Discipline
All CBE schools follow the administrative regulations for Student Code of Conduct and Progressive Student Discipline.
The Student Code of Conduct regulation aims to:
-To promote positive learning environments for each student.
-To help students learn how to develop empathy and become good citizens both within and outside of the school community.
-To meet the CBE’s responsibility to provide students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging for all members of our school community.
-To outline the roles and expectations related to student conduct.
-To explain the consequences when a student’s disruptive behaviour negatively affects the learning environment.
The Progressive Student Discipline regulation aims to:
-To support the creation of welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments for students that respect diversity and foster a sense of belonging for all members of our school community.
-To create the conditions to help students engage in their learning.
-To identify key responsibilities and accountabilities for CBE students.
-To outline the expectations for responses to student behavior.
-To provide guidelines and expectations supporting an effective school-wide approach to progressive student discipline.
You can learn more about these regulations and our school commitment on the school website.
