Week of Learning, Reflection & Connection
This week began with some important learning and reflection across Valley View as we prepared to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
In the days leading up to September 30, students and staff spent time learning about the history and ongoing impact of residential schools. Classes also gathered outside in circles to reflect together and renew their own commitments to Truth and Reconciliation.
These were meaningful moments for our school community and an important reminder that reconciliation is not something we recognize on just one day. It continues through the learning we do, the conversations we have, the questions we ask, and the actions we take.
We have also been taking full advantage of the amazing fall weather! Many of our grade communities have been outside exploring, investigating, and learning from the land around us. It has been great to walk around the school grounds and see students learning together in so many different ways.
If you haven't already, be sure to check out @valleyviewcbe on Instagram. It is a great way to see for yourself some of the hands-on, engaging learning our teachers plan each day for Valley View students. There is always lots happening inside and outside our classrooms!
Get Involved at Valley View!
There are lots of ways for students to get involved, be a leader, and make a difference at Valley View!
Our Student Leadership Panel, supported by Mrs. Boucher and Mr. Todos, will give students opportunities to share their perspectives and ideas about our school. Student voice matters, and this team will help us think together about how we can continue making Valley View a place where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and that they belong.
Students will also have the opportunity to join our Student Action Team, organized by Mr. Krokosh. Students will take an active role in school initiatives such as Celebrations of Learning, Spirit Days, caring for our shared spaces, helping with school events, and finding other fun ways to contribute to our community.
Whether students want to share their voice, lend a helping hand, lead an activity, or make Valley View an even better place to be, there will be lots of opportunities to get involved. We can't wait to see what our students bring to these teams!
Grade 1/2 Staffing Update
We are excited to welcome Ms. Preetpal Gill to Valley View as the permanent teacher for our Grade 1/2 classroom. Ms. Gill brings nearly ten years of teaching experience, and we are thrilled to have her join our school community.
A big thank you to Ms. Angel Guerra for the care and support she has provided to the class since the beginning of the year. Ms. Guerra will remain at Valley View, returning to her intended role supporting students and classrooms throughout the school. She and Ms. Gill will work together over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition for students.
Please join us in giving Ms. Gill a warm Valley View welcome.
Attendance
As we settle further into the school year, we are keeping a close eye on attendance, including both lates and absences. We are beginning to notice some patterns and will be reaching out to some families next week to talk about the importance of arriving on time and attending school every day when students are well.
For students whose attendance is becoming a concern, we will work together to set achievable attendance goals and find ways to support them. We know that mornings can sometimes be difficult, but we also see that once students arrive at school, they are often able to settle in quickly and get on with their day.
Leave Toys and Special Items at Home
We ask families to please help us keep toys, stuffies, collectibles, and other special personal items at home. We know these items can be important to children, but they can also become distracting during learning, create challenges at recess, or unfortunately get lost or damaged.
Thank you for helping us keep the focus on learning and avoid the disappointment that comes when a treasured item goes missing.
Dress for the Weather
Fall weather in Calgary can change quickly! Please make sure your child comes to school dressed for the forecast, including suitable footwear, a jacket, and any other outdoor gear they may need.
Students spend time outside throughout the school day, and a sunny morning can quickly turn into a rainy, windy, or chilly afternoon. Being prepared makes a big difference in helping students stay comfortable and ready to enjoy their time outdoors.
Safety Spotlight: Safe Streets Around Valley View
Keeping our students safe as they travel to and from school is a shared responsibility. Drop-off and pick-up times can get busy around Valley View, so we ask everyone to slow down, stay alert, and take those few extra moments to make safe choices.
Walking, Riding & Rolling
- Cross at corners, intersections, or designated crosswalks. Please do not cross between parked vehicles or buses.
- Stop, look in all directions, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Put phones and headphones away when crossing so you can stay alert to what is happening around you.
- Help children be visible by travelling together and wearing bright or reflective clothing when possible.
Driving Around Our School
- Slow down, follow posted speed limits, and watch carefully for children.
- Please do not enter school bus loading zones, double park, or make U-turns near crosswalks or in playground zones.
- Stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks and intersections.
- Leave at least 5 metres (approximately one car length) between your vehicle and crosswalks, intersections, and stop signs so children can be easily seen.
- Stay focused and distraction-free. A few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep everyone safe around our school.
Video Surveillance | Reminder
Our school has a video surveillance system to help maintain a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and the public, and to help address vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
The video surveillance system is installed and reviewed in accordance with Administrative Regulation 1066. Personal information is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), specifically section 10(1), and the Access to Information Act (ATIA).
Video surveillance may be located in areas such as the school parking lot, building entrances and exits, stairwells, and hallways. Information is recorded and collected to help maintain a safe and secure environment in the school and on school property. Recorded information may be reviewed by the principal or designate and, in the case of reported incidents requiring investigation, law enforcement personnel. Only authorized individuals will review video surveillance information.
Questions about the video surveillance system or the collection and use of recorded information can be directed to the school office.

Casino Fundraiser: We Need Your Help!
Our School Council Casino Fundraiser is November 19 and 20, and this is a big one for Valley View.
The casino brings more than $80,000 back to our school. Those funds make a significant difference in what School Council is able to provide for Valley View students throughout the year.
But we can't do it without volunteers.
There are several shifts that need to be filled over the two days, and every person who signs up helps make this important fundraiser possible. If you can spare a few hours, we would really appreciate your help.
