A Week of Exploration, Discovery, and Reflection

Last week was a wonderful reminder that learning extends far beyond the walls of the classroom. Taking full advantage of the fall season, students engaged in experiences that fostered curiosity, creativity, and meaningful connections to the world around them.

Across the school, classes spent time outdoors exploring local ecosystems, observing seasonal changes, and building a deeper understanding of the natural world through firsthand experiences. Our Kindergarten students transformed nature into both a learning tool and an artistic medium, using found materials to inspire creativity and expression. Meanwhile, our Grade 5/6 students embarked on a virtual journey beyond Earth through an immersive VR experience that allowed them to explore the solar system and visit the International Space Station.

As Thanksgiving approached, students from all grade levels visited the ridge to look for signs of Mokoyii (Time of Change), observing evidence of harvest, preparation for winter, and the many transformations taking place across the landscape. From outdoor exploration and artistic discovery to virtual space travel and land-based learning, the week was filled with authentic, engaging opportunities to learn, wonder, and grow.

Technology Expectations

As students continue to settle into the school year, we would like to remind families of our expectations regarding technology use at school.

Valley View follows the CBE's Admirable Use of Technology Policy, which guides students in using technology responsibly, respectfully, and safely. Families can learn more about technology and digital citizenship expectations here:

Student Personal Mobile Devices - Valley View School

In addition, the CBE's Away for the Day guidelines apply to all students at Valley View and align with Ministerial Order #014/2024. Personal electronic devices that can communicate with or access the internet, including cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, smartwatches, and in some cases headphones, must be powered off and stored away during the school day.

These expectations help create focused learning environments where students can fully engage with their learning and with one another.

Leave Toys and Special Items at Home

We ask families to please help us keep toys, stuffies, collectibles, and other special personal items at home. While these items are often meaningful to children, they can become distractions during learning, create challenges during recess, or unfortunately be lost or damaged.

Thank you for helping us maintain a positive learning environment and avoid the disappointment that can occur when treasured items go missing.

Dress for the Weather

Fall weather in Calgary can change quickly. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed for the forecast, including appropriate footwear, a jacket, and any other outdoor gear they may need.

Students spend time outside throughout the day, and a sunny morning can quickly become a chilly, windy, or rainy afternoon. Being prepared helps students stay comfortable and ready to enjoy outdoor learning and play.

Volunteers Welcome

We are grateful for the many parents and guardians who support learning at Valley View through volunteering.
