Week at a Glance | October 10 - 13

Dear Families,

By now, your child(ren) are settling into good routines at school and building community connections. We started soccer intramurals, which have been going really well. Our division 2 students are enjoying their lunch time outside. Over the coming weeks, all students will be introduced to the school’s MakerSpace and will have an opportunity to engage in some design thinking challenges.

Our School Survey

Valley View School’s Grades 4 & 5 students will be participating in the OurSchool Survey on Wednesday October 11, 2023. CBE's Education Plan prioritizes student voice and well-being in our decision-making processes.  Responses from this survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school.
Both levels offer an opportunity for Grades 4- 12 students to provide feedback on a sense of belonging, positive relationships, anxiety, feeling safe at school, life satisfaction, general health, orientation to well-being, goal-oriented, self-regulation, and cultural awareness of others.

IPPs Coming Home

If your child is on an Individual Program Plan (IPP), you will receive this plan by Friday October 13. Please review the IPP and sign the signature page at the back and return it to your child’s classroom teacher.

Inclusion at Valley View School

In the CBE, we are committed to inclusion, and ensuring that each student has a sense of belonging and feels safe at school. What does this look like in our classrooms? Our classrooms are comprised of a dynamic group of students with varying skills, needs, abilities, and talents. Classrooms are safe, secure, welcoming environments for everyone inclusive of physical ability, mental ability, gender identity and gender expression, sexual orientation, cultural and linguistic diversity, race, ancestry, gender, religious beliefs, socioeconomic status, and family composition.

Our goal is to ensure success for each student every day, and we recognize that some students may need different support than other students. We have conversations with our students about this on a regular basis, and we teach them about the strength we have as a school community in our diversity. We share with students that what one may need to be successful, another might need something else.

We want you to know that as we work with each classroom teacher, we are aware of the varying needs, and each student is supported in the best way possible. This can look like students receiving accommodations, like having a 1:1 laptop, assistive technology, access to the support of our Education Assistant, or through targeted support by the classroom teacher.

Your child is learning how to value differences and appreciate what each student brings to the classroom every day. Classroom teachers will spend time on varying topics, like family, friendships, or be involved in awareness events like Orange Shirt Week. We will share as much communication as we can about our work, either through the parent weekly message, or through the weekly classroom update.

The Community Parent Education Program (CPEP) has organized some parenting courses at no cost. Sessions include Relationship Building, Planned Ignoring, Transition Warnings and Effective Consequences. For more information, please see the attachment on this webpage.

Our final tally has been recorded and we raised a total of $827.45 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Thank you to all families who donated a “Toonie for Terry” and to everyone who participated in the run. We are grateful for our school community and the tremendous spirit of generosity.
