Dear Families,

As Father’s Day approaches, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate all the important caregivers in our children’s lives. Whether you are a father, stepfather, grandparent, guardian, mentor, or someone who supports and guides a child, your role is invaluable. Thank you for the love, strength, and encouragement you provide every day. We hope this Father’s Day brings you joy and appreciation for all that you do. Warm wishes from our school community!

National Indigenous Peoples’ Day June 21st

National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which takes place on the summer solstice, June 21st, the longest day of the year. For generations, many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities have celebrated their cultures, languages, and traditions at this time of year. The summer solstice holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous Peoples, marking a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.

On Tuesday June 23rd, we will be recognizing National Indigenous Peoples' Day by having Knowledge Keeper Clarence "Skip" Wolf Leg Jr. share his drumming and stories with us. Skip Wolf Leg is a traditional Indigenous powwow drummer and Knowledge Keeper from Siksika Nation who lives and performs in the Calgary area. Skip Wolf Leg will also open up our Outdoor Learning Space with an honour song followed by lessons from Elder Saa'kokoto. Elder Saa'kokoto is a highly respected Blackfoot Elder and traditional Knowledge Keeper from the Tall People Clan of the Kainai Nation in Southern Alberta. He is well known throughout the Calgary area for his storytelling, cultural teachings, and land-based education. We look forward to our learning with Skip Wolf Leg and Elder Saa'kokoto next week!

Culture Day Monday June 22nd

On Monday, June 22nd, we are excited to celebrate the many cultures and identities that make up our Valley View School community. This day has been created by Student Voice representatives who wish to highlight the diversity that makes up our school. The day will focus on:

Wear & Share:
Students and staff are invited to wear traditional clothing or a jersey that is meaningful to them. Classes will take part in a “Wear and Share” activity, giving students an opportunity to talk about what they are wearing and why it is special.

Classroom Celebrations:
Some classes may choose to organize a potluck. If this applies to your child’s class, your child’s teacher will share details. Please note that all classrooms will ensure safe food options are available for students with allergies or dietary sensitivities.

School Mural Project:
All students are invited to contribute to a collaborative mural in the Learning Commons centered on the question:
“What is something you want others to know about your culture, family, or identity?” Students can draw or write their responses using provided materials. The completed murals will be displayed in the gym.

Morning Announcements:
Throughout the week, student-led announcements will highlight the diversity of our school by featuring one of the 35 countries or 33 languages represented at Valley View.

We look forward to a meaningful day of learning, sharing, and celebrating together!

Grade 6 Farewell Activities

Grade 6 students will participate in some school-based activities on Thursday, June 25th.
