Week at a Glance | December 11 - 15

Dear Families,

Thanks to all Valley View families who attended the Festival of Lights Winter Celebration on Thursday evening. We had such a great turn out and it was a wonderful time to connect with families. We hope you enjoyed the event and all the activities and performances. We also thank you for supporting our school initiatives by purchasing hot chocolate or taking green screen photos. We raised a total of $452 for school initiatives. Thank you!

Elder Pablo Russell

We are excited to have Elder Pablo Russell share with us his presentation on “The Buffalo Way”. Elder Pablo is a storyteller, international speaker and keynote. On Monday December 11, Elder Pablo will share his stories about Winter and The Buffalo Way with all our students. A big thank you goes to the Valley View School Council for providing the funds for us to work with Elder Pablo. We appreciate your support!

Art Cards Delivery

Thanks to all families who purchased Art Cards. We raised $350 in profits for our school initiatives. Art Cards items will be sent home on Monday December 11.

Ever Active Priorities

Our grade 4 and 5 community classes have been engaging with Ever Active to observe the traffic around our school and identify priorities. A few observations students made include:

-A lot of people are doing U-Turns at intersections around the school, even at the patrolled crosswalk at 41St SE and Doverwood Place SE

-Perceived speeding is a concern

-There are 60-80 spaces for bikes, lots are broken, space to add more; One long bike rack and 3 small bike racks

-Students are scared by cars, not driving safely

-More paint on the road - crosswalks need to be repainted

-The gate by the ball diamond is open. Cars are able to drive in freely

-No dogs sign for school field

-No walking path by kiss and drop off

-No walking path along the patrollers sidewalk

Based on these observations and discussions, the grade 4 & 5 students have decided to focus their energies on two areas:

·       safe driving practices

·       increasing rates of active and more sustainable travel modes

The next phase of the project will be to look at resources and connect with other partners, like the City of Calgary and CPS, to outline project details.

Pedestrian Safety

We want all families who walk across the surrounding school intersections to exercise caution. Please be extra vigilant as sometimes drivers are unaware and will continue to speed even in variable weather conditions. Please also exercise care and obey all traffic laws when you are driving.

School Safety Patrols – Signs and Signals

Our AMA School Safety Patrols are actively patrolling for this school year. It’s so important that when you’re driving or walking home from school, you obey the school patrollers’ signs and signals. When patrollers are holding out their stop signs, this means vehicle traffic must stop, so pedestrians can cross the crosswalk. Once patrollers blow their whistle and step back with the stop signs behind their backs, it is safe for vehicles to proceed, and pedestrians to wait until the next crossing.
