Dear Families,

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make our Fall BBQ and Meet the Teacher evening such a success! Your dedication and enthusiasm were truly appreciated. We’re so proud of the warm welcome our staff extended to families and the amazing work on display in classrooms and hallways. A special shoutout goes to our incredible student leaders, who worked tirelessly (and with a smile!) throughout the evening to support the event. We’d also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Rotary Club of Calgary, NSTEP, Omni Eyecare, YYC (Youth Centres of Calgary), and the school councils of VVS and Ian Baz for their generous support and partnership. Thank you for being part of such a vibrant school community!

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This year marks a decade since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada released its final reports and 94 Calls to Action .

At CBE, we are committed to advancing the calls to action specific to education. In addition to commemorating National Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day, September is a good opportunity and reminder for schools to review their renewed TRC commitments and plan for school-wide action.

At Valley View School, we recognized this day by discussing the Calls to Action and understanding what these calls mean, reading stories related to Orange Shirt Day, and making classroom commitments to reconciliACTION. We gathered outside for a school-wide circle where students shared their actions. We were also honoured to have Elder John Snow from Stoney Nakoda to share his experiences and discuss reconciliation with the grade six classes.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be observed on Tuesday September 30th. There will be no school on this day for this important observance.

Online Series on Supporting Child and Youth Well-Being

The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community.

Attached is a poster with sessions designed to provide families with knowledge, tools, and strategies to help navigate the challenges and opportunities of raising children and teens today. Along with the poster, additional session details are available on the Child and Youth Family and Caregiver Series public facing page.

Standards for the Use of Personal Mobile Devices and Social Media in Schools

As you are aware, the Government of Alberta released a Ministerial Order on the use of personal mobile devices and social media in schools. This means that students are not permitted to use their personal devices at all during the school day. Personal devices include:

-cellphone

-tablet

-smartwatch

-laptop

There are several students wearing smartwatches to school and this creates a distraction from learning. If a student brings their personal device to school, including their smartwatch, they will be reminded to put it away in their backpack. If they continue to use their device or smartwatch, the classroom teacher will send the student to the office to store their device until the end of the school day. We appreciate your support and understanding.
