Dear Families,

There are lots of new changes around Valley View School lately. The in-road pedestrian signs along 26th avenue and 41st street have been in place for a couple of weeks now. We hope this is helping to promote safer traffic behaviour around the school. We are looking forward to having new pedestrian lights at the 26th avenue and 40th street crosswalk this summer. Also, our new east side playground is being well utilized as our students love the new play structure! Thank you again to our VVS School Council for making this a reality for us. We couldn’t have done it without your support and fundraising efforts.

National Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Next week will mark National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year. To recognize this day, we will be having learning activities that help students understand First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures, peoples and histories in Canada. Adrian Goulet will be here on Monday to share tipi teachings, and Elder John Snow will be at VVS on Tuesday to share stories from the Stoney people. Various learning activities are also planned for June 21st

Spirit Week Theme Days Next Week

Next week we will have a theme day for each day of the week. We encourage everyone to participate and dress up according to each theme:

Monday is Messy Hair Day

Tuesday is Neon Day – wear something bright!

Wednesday is Dress Like a Tourist Day!

Thursday is Decades Day – wear something from a different decade!

Friday is Wear Orange Day – To acknowledge National Indigenous Peoples' Day

Safe Routes to School – Walking Routes Initiative

The grade 4 and 5 students have been taking count of all pedestrian, cyclist, and driver behaviour around our school. These teams of students have counted pedestrians, wheelers, cars, and larger vehicles passing through each crosswalk as well as unsafe behaviours that happen around them. The data is now being compiled by EverActive so we can get a full picture of patterns and trends around our school. Hopefully this information will help us to improve safety around our school. Everyone has a part to play, and we are counting on all VVS families to obey all traffic laws and be safe around the school.

Active and Safe Routes to School will also be supporting us in painting the pavement on Friday June 21st. Selected sidewalks along 26th street and Doverville Crescent will have a unique VVS logo painted along a determined walking route. This walking route is to help more families walk to school by following the VVS logo. We are excited to be painting the pavement and hope that more families choose to walk to school!

Library Books are Due

We have many books students have borrowed from our school library that need to be returned. We ask that you take the time to locate these books with your child(ren) and return these books to the library as soon as possible. Any unreturned books will amount to a $10/book overdue fine charged to your MyCBE account. Thank you for your cooperation.

IPPs and Report Cards

Your child’s report card will be available to view, download and/or print starting from June 26th, 2024 to July 26th, 2024. Parents / Legal Guardians can sign into MyCBE to view student information, including report cards, comments from teachers, assignments and grades, and attendance information. For best access to view student information, sign into the MyCBE portal. If you are interested in learning more about your child’s learning, there are supporting resources such as “How is my child doing in school?” and “Report Card Indicators” in the Assessment and Reporting webpage.

If your child has an Individual Program Plan (IPP), you will be receiving it starting today. Please take the time to read through it, sign the signature page and return it to school by June 21st. Thank you!

Sankofa After School Club

We want to say a big thank you to Sankofa for working with us to offer an after-school dance club for our students. The club was highly subscribed to, and the students absolutely loved the dance choreography and high energy experience. These sorts of offerings really support our students' sense of belonging in school and provide them with enriching opportunities.
