Dear Families,
We hope you had an enjoyable winter break, and we wish you a happy new year! Welcome back to school! We are excited about the many learning opportunities for our students in the new year. We want to welcome Mrs. Darlene Arsenault, Education Assistant, to our team. Mrs. Arsenault brings years of experience to her position, and we are happy to have her at VVS.
K–3 Literacy and Numeracy Screening Assessments
As you are aware, beginning in 2024–2025, the Provincial Government asks schools to administer universal screeners for students in K-3. This includes mandatory screening assessments in September and January for all students in grades 1 to 3, with a follow-up assessment in June for those students requiring additional supports after completing the January assessment. Additionally, required screening assessments are administered in January for all children in Kindergarten, beginning in January 2025. These assessments help teachers plan for literacy and numeracy support and results are not used for reporting purposes.
Report Cards and IPPs
Families will be able to view online student report cards for Kindergarten – Grade 12 students on Jan. 27th. Report cards for the 2024-25 school year can be viewed, downloaded and printed. Parents and guardians can log in to MyCBE to view student information including report cards, comments from your child’s teacher and attendance information. For best access to information, log in to the MyCBE portal instead of using the PowerSchool app. For more information or support, please visit the CBE website.
If your child has an Individual Program Plan (IPP), it will be sent home with your child for your review and signature.
Kindergarten teachers will report progress to parents/legal guardians via January and June report cards. In January, progress in English Language Arts and Literature (ELAL) and Mathematics will be communicated to parents/legal guardians via the report card. In June, progress in all discipline areas will be communicated to parents/legal guardians via the report card.
Elev8 Lacrosse January 22nd – 23rd
Thanks to the generosity of a local sponsor, Calgary Knights Lacrosse Association, a select number of schools will get to experience the CLASSROOM Lacrosse program at no cost. Elev8 Lacrosse’s Partnership with the Calgary Knights seeks to generate interest within schools and surrounding communities to continue to grow one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Lacrosse has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years and will be featured in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, for the first time in over a century!
ELEV8 CLASSROOM Lacrosse is designed to introduce all our students to Canada's National Summer Sport created by the First Nations. All instructors have an extensive background in Lacrosse, playing either in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and/or professionally in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Elev8’s high caliber and professional staff seek to provide students with an unforgettable experience through an engaging and action-packed introduction to the sport of lacrosse.
The Elev8 classroom experience will be offered to all students on January 22nd -23rd as part of the Phys-Ed program.
Dance SoundKreations January 27th – February 10th
We are grateful to an Education Matters donor for being able to provide all our students with a dance residency. SoundKreations brings movement and creativity to schools across Canada! The in-school dance and poetry programs, designed by educators and artists, offer age-appropriate curriculum for K-12 students, promoting physical literacy, mental well-being, and artistic expression – all aligned with provincial curriculum outcomes. ALWAYS RELEVANT, ALWAYS FUN! SoundKreations stays on top of youth culture, so students are guaranteed 100% buy-in (actually). It’s learning they’ll love! This year SoundKreations will be offering four main dance program styles: Hip-Hop, CubaNYC (Latin), AfroBEAT and DanceCOMBO. There will be a division 1 and division 2 performance for students and families on February 10th.
Festival of Lights Winter Celebration Fundraising Total
Thanks again to all families who came to the Winter Celebration in December. We’re happy to share that families contributed $835 to Valley View School initiatives from hot chocolate sales, the cake walk, and photo booth. We are very grateful for your contributions and support! Thank you!
Last Chance Lost and Found
We have a lot of lost and found items accumulating in our school. Please make sure your child collects their items before January 17th as all items will be donated to a local charity. It is always a good idea to label your child’s clothes and belongings so they can be returned right away. Thank you.
