Dear Families,
We want to wish everyone who celebrates the Lunar New Year a wonderful year ahead! May the Year of the Horse bring you great energy and positivity in your life. Additionally, we would like to acknowledge the beginning of Ramadan and extend our heartfelt wishes of Ramadan Mubarak to all those observing this holy month.
Pink Shirt Day
On Wednesday, February 25th, we will acknowledge Pink Shirt Day. This day promotes awareness and prevention of bullying in schools, workplaces, homes, and online, while supporting the development of children’s self-esteem. The Calgary Board of Education supports bullying prevention and recognizes the importance of Pink Shirt Day. We encourage everyone to wear a pink shirt to show their support.
At Valley View School, we strive to create a safe, caring, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all staff and students. We focus on building positive relationships and helping students develop self-regulation and conflict-management skills. We use the Connecting to Spirit model, a culturally responsive approach that reflects Indigenous perspectives on learning. This model recognizes that learning is interconnected with the mind, heart, body, and spirit, and supports students in developing a strong sense of self. Additionally, we draw on resources like MindUp, Conscious Discipline, and Friendology, to support healthy relationships and conflict resolution at school.
Sometimes students experience challenges in their friendships. Often these situations involve conflict or unkind behaviour. In rare cases, they may involve aggressive behaviour or bullying. Guided by the CBE’s Progressive Student Discipline Administrative Regulation, we recognize that each situation is unique and does not require the same response. If your child experiences conflict at school that they cannot resolve independently, we encourage them to seek support from their teacher or another trusted adult at school or at home.
Alien Inline Skating
Inline skating will begin on March 2nd for all students, and we’re excited to offer this opportunity! The fee for this activity has been significantly subsidized through the generous donation of a private donor, and we are very grateful to provide this experience for all students. Please remember to send your child to school with a helmet; however, if you’re unable to do so, the program’s facilitators will have some helmets available.
Next Year Registration and Lottery
We have completed the lottery selection for the Science program for next year. All new student registrations were included in the lottery, and successful applicants have been notified. We will now begin working on the waitlist for those who were not accepted into the Science program. Please refrain from calling the school for updates while we go through this process. All current VVS Science and Community registered students will remain registered for the next school year.
Healthy Hunger
Please remember to place your Healthy Hunger orders in by midnight tomorrow for Subway next Thursday!
