Dear Families,
We’ve had a great week back after the spring break! We had the privilege of having our S4 (Start Smart Stay Safe) Officer, Cst. Hamel join us this week to work with students on using problem solving skills, making healthy choices, using respectful communication skills, building healthy relationships, being digitally safe, being safe at home, at school and in the community and serving others to build an inclusive, resilient community. Students were highly engaged and asked a lot of great questions! We look forward to continuing our work with Cst. Hamel in the future.
Science Olympics – Month of April
Our school will be participating in Science Olympics this year!
The APEGA Science Olympics is an interactive and interschool engineering and geoscience event for students in grades 1 to 12 that takes learning beyond the classroom. Students are given a series of problem-solving challenges that demonstrate the fun side of engineering and geoscience and allow them to see first-hand how these fields impact our everyday lives. Students cover many areas of scientific study while learning to work and interact within a group. They use their skills and innovative ideas to develop creative solutions to various challenges throughout the day. All challenges at the event are related to Alberta school curriculum and have been developed by a group comprised of APEGA professional engineers and professional geoscientists, as well as Alberta teachers.
We will be sending one team of 5 from each division to the University of Calgary on May 24th. Winning teams will present their prototypes and designs at the Celebration of Learning on May 1st, for a final assessment from the VVC community!
Celebration of Learning – May 1st
Join us on May 1st for a Celebration of Learning at the school from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This special event will showcase student achievements in literacy, numeracy, science, and well-being for learning, as well as the actions we've taken in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. We can't wait to share the exciting progress our students have made with you and celebrate their accomplishments together. Stay tuned for more details about this event!
Scholastic Book Fair – April 28th – May 2nd
We're excited to announce that our school will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair, which will take place from April 28, 2025 to May 2, 2025 in our learning commons.
The Scholastic Book Fair empowers our students to choose books they love, and with so many options, they’re sure to find themselves in the pages. This year’s Fair is going to be epic, but we need volunteers to make it happen. We hope that you can offer your time and talents to help students become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers —which in turn makes them bolder, prouder, and stronger individuals. And since every purchase benefits our school, helping is twice as rewarding.
If you’re available to lend a hand at this upcoming event, and hold a valid police clearance, please contact our library assistant Ms. Priya at kpbadda@cbe.ab.ca and share which Fair activities interest you most. Opportunities to assist include:
• Helping students write their wishlists in the noon of April 28 (11:30 am to 2 pm) and April 30 (8:30 am to 2 pm)
• Handling cash at checkout on May 1st (8:30am to 2:30 pm and during celebration learning event ) (5:30 pm to 7 pm)
For students, this is one of the most anticipated events of the school year—and as a volunteer, you’ll have the chance to experience the Bookjoy firsthand! Please let us know if you can volunteer.
